Fraunhofer IPA

Fraunhofer IPA

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is Germany's leading organisation in applied research. At present, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft comprises approximately 80 research units, including 58 Fraunhofer Institutes, in over 40 different locations in Germany. The staff of around 12,500, predominantly qualified scientists and engineers, work with an annual research budget of over one billion Euros.

The Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA) develops solutions for organisational and technological functions in the production sector of industrial companies. The activities conducted by the department of robot systems encompass all the areas connected with robot deployment and automatable production processes, as well as the development of robot systems and their key components. Examples are the development of new processes, high-dynamics sensor-actor applications and production cell set ups. A wide range of development tools, laboratories and testing facilities are available. With more than 250 researchers, Fraunhofer IPA is one of the largest research institutes within Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, belonging to the leading research institutes in the field of robotics and automation. IPA currently holds hundreds of patents with many additional applications pending.

Fraunhofer IPA supports the COMET consortium with its experience in the setup of high precision robot machining cells and also with its experience in development specifically for the benefit of SMEs, which reflects the background of the majority of its customers. With SMErobot, an FP6 IP, Fraunhofer IPA coordinated the development of a new generation of robots for SMEs.
